As February unfolds, so does the celebration of Black History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and honoring the rich tapestry of African American contributions that have shaped the United States and the world. The origins of Black History Month can be traced back to the pioneering work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History.” In 1926, Dr. Woodson, along with the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, established “Negro History Week” to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The week aimed to ensure that the achievements and history of African Americans were incorporated into the broader historical narrative.
Over time, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month, officially recognized in the United States in 1976. This extension acknowledged the need for a more comprehensive exploration of African American contributions and struggles throughout history.
